It has been a loooooooong time since I blogged and longer than that since I blogged about a movie. A quiet (read lonely) saturday afternoon seemed like a good time to remedy both. So here it goes.
The first time I saw "The Motorcyle Diaries" was about 3 years back. Getting bored some days back, I looked into my box of DVDs and decided to give a shot to this movie again. Being a good software engineer and using the "reuse" principle, here is what the movie is basically about (taken from wikipedia):
"The Motorcycle Diaries (Spanish: Diarios de motocicleta) is a 2004 biopic about the journey and written memoir of the 23-year-old Ernesto Guevara, who would several years later become internationally known as the iconic Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara. The film recounts the 1952 expedition, initially by motorcycle, across South America by Guevara and his friend Alberto Granado."

The movie has a very realistic look and feel (the way it should be). It keeps a steady pace as two friends discover the land they are living in. Screenplay is awesome, and makes you relate to the two wanderers by capturing small small moments which you would expect anyone to go through on such a journey e.g. trying to get a place to sleep wherever they can, stealing some beer bottles from a party they became waiters for, to make a living. The background score is really good and gels well with the mood of the movie. I like the tagline of the movie "Let the world change you, and you can change the world" :).
Overall, its a good watch and you will feel (if you are from India and love cinema) that Indian film industry has wasted quite a lot of time in not giving cinema its worth, not considering the fact that excellence is something you need to shoot for. Stop imitating stuff, look within, and create stuff which will stand the test of time.
Anyways, one of the scenes from the movie, that I just loved:
These guys drop by Ernesto's girlfriend, Chichina's house during the trip. Her parents are not very willing to give their daughter to Ernesto. She and Ernesto are dancing together during an in-house party (Ernesto doesnt know how to dance well, but she forces her to dance and is smiling while teaching him how to dance) Ernesto asks Chichina to go out with him tonight.
Chichina: Dad asked aunt Rosana to not let me out of her sight.....Mom wants us to break up.
Ernesto: Don't your parents realize that deeper you bury the diamonds, the more determined the pirate is to take them ?
Chichina: Believe me, this diamond wouldn't mind being taken :) (I added the smiley...beacuse thats how my face was after this dialog)
